Every few weeks a truck goes over on its side on the Clarks Ferry Bridge. The way it was designed, truck drivers experience a gradually curved stretch of highway at 65, fail to slow down to the 45 mph speed limit, and then flip when they get to the sharp curve on the bridge. I happened to have a camera along yesterday and managed to get a picture.
This is the second truck flip in a row; one had previously flipped right at the same spot the day before. You can see the problem area for yourself
at google maps, the particular problem area is the south curve on the bridge.
This whole area is a deathtrap; to the north of the bridge is a truck stop placed on a stretch of road where engineers apparently thought it was a good idea to have four highway lanes side-by-side with a suicide lane in the middle, for those insane enough to try to cross, so those that do make it across the bridge without flipping get to experience an area where there are trucks and cars trying to cross two lanes of busy highway traffic. Being an extremely busy stretch of road, drivers often get frustrated and try to make it when they really do not have enough time. Either the oncoming traffic stops in time or, as frequently happens, more accidents. There are also frequent accidents on that gradual curve before the one on the bridge; everyone is in a hurry to pass before they get to the problem area. However, the visibility is poor on that curve, so they end up slamming into the slowing traffic ahead.
Probably the only way to fix this area is going to be daily police coverage to encourage drivers to slow down; the chance of death certainly is not enough to bother them. I get to experience this deathtrap twice a day on my way to and from work, so I certainly hope they do something soon. On a parting note, here is another picture I took; is that the driver standing at the other end of his truck?
To the surprise of no one there has been yet another truck flip at the Clark's Ferry deathtrap. Here's another image of the flip.
