Wegmans has
come to Harrisburg at last.
I have enjoyed their Williamsport location on occasion, but it is a bit far for me to drive for regular shopping. This store appears somewhat larger than that location, mainly in the Market Cafe section. This section includes a Chinese by-the-pound buffet called the Wokery, prepared foods section with seafood, Italian, and traditional American foods, a sub shop, pizza shop, coffee shop, and a large indoor and outdoor seating area.
There is a large selection of Honest Tea in glass bottles, which is hard to find in this area otherwise. My previous source for this tea was Sheetz, but they only carry the plastic bottles. The bottle cap on the left is from a bottle of their lemon tea; they don't have these fun quotes on the plastic caps.
They have a very large cheese shop, which a local newspaper article said carries hundreds of cheeses. There are certainly many cheeses there, and there are large cheese wheels all over the store which at first glance I thought were decorative, but appear to be real on closer inspection.
The bakery will probably be my most frequent haunt. I dislike the boring generic loaf bread with soulless crusts often loaded with high fructose corn syrup that are so popular in this area. Unfortunately I don't get much time to bake bread myself, so this will be a good alternative.
Standard grocery items are available on the other side of the store, but there doesn't seem to be much selection yet. It appears they are still stocking shelves and don't have the full selection of items installed. For example they have more varieties of olive oil than I've ever seen, but peanut oil is only available in tiny bottles or 3 gallon jugs. Their selections in the meat case are also noticeably sparse. We were there late and there was a lot of stocking activity going on, so it will be interesting to see how much, or indeed if, this expands into more variety.
It is nice to have another shopping alternative in this area instead of yet another
AHold Corporation spinoff with the same goods as all the rest. We now have
Weis and Wegmans as 'larger chain' local choices (check out the
West Shore Farmer's market too), and enough competition to keep everyone honest.
