First Bicycle Commute
I bicycled to work today. A 5.3 mile trip from Summerdale to downtown Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), I have been talking about cycling to work ever since I moved in the spring. A series of issues as well as a need to improve my general fitness level so I could do so successfully delayed my attempt.I am hoping this is the start of many such trips; I want to do this once or twice a week starting out. As my health improves and I get more comfortable biking in less optimal conditions (rain and perhaps snow), I should be able to do this more often.
Over the years I have gotten into and out of cycling in places like rail trails and bike paths, but I always lose interest. Although the paths are fun, I found motivation lacking to do it frequently. Preparing and getting to such locations takes planning and time which is in short supply. The idea of transportation bicycling has always interested me but was impractical at my previous rural location, not only many more miles but quite a few mountains apart from my workplace.
Although I'd like to say my motivation is saving the environment or some other noble goal, in truth I am doing it mainly to improve my health as well as saving a few dollars on fuel. If it helps other causes in the meantime that is certainly a good thing, regardless.

Great to hear that it worked out. This morning was a beautiful day for a bike ride! Hopefully the trip home is the same.

I think you hit the nail on the head though. At some point we have to decide that we will go hit the trail, or road in sub-optimal weather conditions in order to stay in shape and improve fitness. It took me a long time to get that, but now that I have, I am sorry I waited so long.

w00000! Have fun with that. Not sure how much biking you've done, so you might want to watch out for the seat chafing unfun. ;)
