With the recent release of
iTunes 4.9, I am discovering the world of
podcasting. Podcasting is essentially on-demand radio.
I enjoy listening to talk radio on my hour-long commute to work, but nearly all the programs available nowadays focus on politics. I would rather listen to programs on computing issues, science, and other areas of interest to me. I was stuck suffering through the garbage large media conglomerates were willing to jam down my ear canal, until now.
Podcasting is the next step in the beginning of the end of centralized content. It started with blogs, which already provide news and information you cannot get from big media. As internet pipes expand, eventually this trend will move into the video space as well. Large companies with vested interests in keeping content locked up are becoming aware of and starting to build legal and technological barriers to slow and attempt to prevent this from happening.
Some of my favorite podcasts at this point include
Tips from the Top Floor,
The Daily Source Code,
Science Friday, and the
InfoTalk Podcast Series. I have also discovered people are starting to release audiobooks via podcasting as well; I would recommend giving
EarthCore a try if you are an audiobook fan.
I was burning these to CD-R to play in my car, then throwing them away. That was getting expensive rather quickly though, so I ended up going out and purchasing an
iPod Mini. The main reason I chose this product was not actually the product itself, but
this handy gadget.
