That's interesting. Is there a particular reason for your avoidance of HFCS?
Although the food industry has funded many studies stating it is safe, I am not so certain. I don't avoid HFCS completely, as the research I have seen on the subject tends to be from questionable sources, but I am not convinced either way. I try to limit my intake of HFCS for this reason, but if it was for this reason alone I would only eliminate it when convenient and not aggressively.
Use of the product also seems to be a sign in many foods of cheap manufacturing processes without care about flavor or quality. The flavor does seem to be different in many foods using it versus using more traditional ingredients. Maple syrup is a good example here; high fructose corn syrup is nothing like the real thing but is commonly used as a substitute anyway. The third reason for avoidance would be targeting the substance inherently lowers fructose intake (a substance there is no scientific argument about, it is bad for you in quantity). Often to find alternatives I discover whole other foods and tastes which don't involve sugar at all. One example here would be unsweetened coffees and teas which I now drink instead of sodas in many situations. Not that I never drink soda at all, I still have the occasional Mountain Dew for example, but I no longer drink it every day.
What did you think of the Goose (Something) soda--made with cane sugar?
Goose Island soda is actually mentioned in the Wikipedia article on HFCS in the taste section. It does seem to have a lighter, less syrupy, taste than HFCS based sodas. I definitely like it, especially the Orange Cream.
Fruits and other foods have different, naturally occuring levels of fructose in them and may need to be avoided by people with fructose intolerance. Grapes are on the "no" list, but may be safe if the person's problems are mild.
After 4 years of unexplained diarrhea, I'm healthy again just by eliminating fructose!
Have you tried to use olive oil based butter products? I know I have tried them and to me they taste great. It is worth a look if you haven't done so yet.
You might be interested in my web page listing foods I've found with no hfcs. I encourage others to share their finds so that I can flesh out my list - I've only just started it. Thanks!
